Ohio City Boosts Data Transparency to Support Personnel Decisions during Pandemic with Analytics Tool

The City of Akron faced urgent personnel and staffing challenges when COVID-19 struck: leaders needed real-time, transparent data to identify essential versus nonessential employees, track leave and overtime, and report figures to government agencies, but their 20-year-old HR system had no dashboarding or easy reporting. To address this, the City of Akron turned to ESRI and deployed ArcGIS Insights to give administrators faster, more accessible personnel analytics.

ESRI’s ArcGIS Insights was implemented by the city’s four-member GIS team to deliver daily-updated dashboards showing totals for essential/nonessential, temporary/full-time status, overtime costs, retirement eligibility, KPIs and trends. The solution provided real-time access, reduced calls to HR and finance, and increased the volume of dashboard information supplied by roughly 7–8×, enabling faster, data-driven decisions with minimal training required.
