GIS Field Apps Keep Public Works Department Running Smoothly

The City of Nacogdoches sought to modernize its public works operations, which relied on paper forms, spreadsheets, and handwritten notes for dumpster routes, work orders, and vehicle maintenance. To replace these slow, error-prone processes the city’s GIS division deployed ESRI mobile solutions—including Workforce for ArcGIS, Collector for ArcGIS, Survey123 for ArcGIS, and ArcGIS Online—to put data and assignments directly into the hands of field crews.

Using ESRI tools the team automated dumpster selection and sequencing with nightly scripts feeding Workforce, built a Collector-based Public Works Work Order System, and created a Survey123 vehicle maintenance form, all accessible on iPads. The result: drivers complete routes faster and citizen calls about pickups have decreased, work orders are easier to track and crews are more efficient, pothole and storm-drain needs are verifiable over time, and the city has saved time and money by avoiding outside software.
