Division of US Army Forecasts COVID-19 Pandemic Peaks to Distribute Resources with Analysis Software

The United States Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District needed to forecast COVID‑19 peaks for inpatient beds, ICU beds and ventilators so it could allocate resources and site alternate care facilities. A four‑person model and analysis team was producing outputs from five national models, but the existing digital dashboard was slow, hard for senior leaders to interpret, and required daily manual updates, so the district turned to ESRI and its ArcGIS Insights platform for a better solution.

Using ESRI’s ArcGIS Insights with an ArcGIS Notebook and scripted Python workflows, the team consolidated multiple models into a single, interactive, geo‑enabled dashboard and automated daily updates. The new ESRI solution made data available in about 10 minutes (versus hours previously), provided national, state and county views with filterable maps and charts, and saved roughly a month of staff time over a six‑month period while improving leadership understanding and enabling deeper, faster analysis.
