Using mapping software to increase accessibility of local information

Croydon Council, one of London’s largest boroughs, needed a simple, accessible way for residents to find local services and location-based information online. The council’s challenge was to deliver an outstanding online experience that made it easy for constituents to locate amenities, representatives and service details relevant to where they live.

Using eSpatial OnDemand GIS, Croydon launched the About Your Area (AYA) interactive map in August 2011, allowing users to set a home address, search nearby services, and view summaries listing local councillor, MP, council tax band and collections. The system already includes over 600 amenities across 27 services grouped into five themes, providing a scalable, cost-effective solution that improved public access to local information and met the council’s digital objectives.
