Fire Department and Hospital Collaborate to Share Patient Data and Improve Care

Atascocita Volunteer Fire Department, a suburban Houston EMS provider, wanted better visibility into what happened to patients after transport so crews could improve care and close the feedback loop with the hospital. To solve this challenge, the department partnered with Kingwood Medical Center and ESO, using ESO’s health data exchange (HDE) software to share patient outcome information.

With ESO HDE, Atascocita Fire can review hospital diagnoses, test results, and treatment recommendations, which has helped drive protocol changes for sepsis, stroke, and STEMI care. The shared data led to earlier Code Sepsis activation, new guidance for prehospital sepsis treatment, and the ability for paramedics to administer Heparin and Plavix in the field, shortening time to treatment and supporting better patient outcomes.
