Case Study: Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi achieves strategy alignment and performance growth with ESM Software

A ESM Software Case Study

Preview of the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ Case Study

ESM Software is a vital tool when implementing the BSC method for strategic management and performance

Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, Ltd. faced a major challenge as it expanded across Japan and globally: it lacked a clear strategy management culture, had poor communication across departments and locations, and used inconsistent employee performance measures that were not tied to strategic goals. ESM Software helped the bank address these issues using its Executive Strategy Manager (ESM) software in support of the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) methodology.

With ESM Software’s guidance, the bank adopted a disciplined top-down Balanced Scorecard approach, linked risk management and incentive compensation to strategy, and improved communication through training and clearer strategy maps. The result was a stronger strategy-focused culture where employees understood their role in execution, and the approach was later adopted across the broader organization after the merger. The case study also reports a net income increase from -62.2 billion yen in 2001 to 1531.1 billion yen in 2015, an improvement of approximately 2500%.
