Using metadata-driven automation for ETL conversions as part of leap to Big Data

Multibillion-Dollar Global Telecom Company engaged erwin as it moved toward a Big Data architecture and needed to integrate metadata from Kafka, Flume, Hadoop, RDBMS, Teradata, flat files and MongoDB. The customer also planned a migration to Talend for ETL, which required rapid conversion and validation of a large number of complex legacy graphs with limited documentation and extensive testing needs.

erwin ran a proof-of-concept and used its data connectors (partnering with Talend) to automate conversions, building intermediate converters to enable two-way Kafka–Talend reading and generic byte-array handling. The result: on-time conversion of 30+ legacy graphs comprising roughly 1,000 components, estimated license cost savings in the millions, integrated internal systems, and a streamlined, scalable ETL conversion process that improved predictability and adoption of best practices.
