Case Study: XL Axiata boosts indoor connectivity at Jakarta Airport with Ericsson Radio Dot System

A Ericsson Case Study

Preview of the XL Axiata Case Study

XL Axiata enhances its M2M offering in Indonesia using Ericsson’s Device Connection Platform

XL Axiata, one of Indonesia’s major telecommunications operators, needed to improve indoor mobile coverage for its customers, especially in high-traffic public venues like Jakarta Airport. Despite its broad national network, only 40 percent of consumers were satisfied with their indoor connectivity experience, and the airport’s existing 2G-based antenna system delivered poor 3G and LTE performance while driving up rental costs. Ericsson provided the Ericsson Radio Dot System and Micro Remote Radio Unit as part of an indoor small cell solution.

Ericsson implemented an LTE and 3G/WCDMA indoor small cell deployment at Jakarta Airport, fully integrated with XL Axiata’s existing network and supported by project management, design, implementation, and tuning services. The results included a 200–300 percent increase in traffic, a 30 percent reduction in antenna rental costs, a 23 percent reduction in annual opex, and a 12 percent reduction in total capex, while significantly improving subscribers’ indoor voice and data experience.
