VimpelCom Russia sustains high network coverage and quality during the Sochi 2014 Winter Games with the help of Ericsson Special Event Support

VimpelCom, one of Russia’s top telecom operators, needed to maintain high network coverage and quality during the 2014 Sochi Winter Games despite a surge in visitors and traffic. With limited ability to install indoor base stations, the company faced the challenge of delivering reliable service using only outdoor infrastructure. Ericsson provided Special Event Support to help prepare the network for the event.

Ericsson worked with VimpelCom on network audits, preventative maintenance, remote and on-site monitoring, proactive fault management, and network optimization ahead of and during the Games. The result was no major network disturbances, tripled 3G coverage in event areas, and strong customer satisfaction, with about 8.5 TB of data transferred per day during the two-week event—roughly twice the normal average.
