Case Study: Telstra transforms its transport network with Ericsson’s all-IP solution

A Ericsson Case Study

Preview of the Telstra Case Study

Telstra’s converged all-IP transport network has become a major strategic asset

Telstra, Australia’s leading full-service provider of fixed and wireless services, needed to expand capacity for rapidly growing fixed and mobile broadband traffic while reducing capex and opex. As its network demand surged across a vast and harsh geography, Telstra looked for a way to transform its traditional transport infrastructure into a converged all-IP platform for faster, more cost-effective service delivery. Ericsson provided the transport technology foundation, including optical transport and DWDM equipment.

Ericsson implemented a nationwide, converged all-IP transport network with over 35,000 optical transport elements and more than 28,000 km of next-generation DWDM links connecting major centers. The new architecture improved reach, redundancy, scalability, and resilience, enabling Telstra to launch services such as dual-carrier HSPA+, faster fixed broadband, and IPTV more quickly and without major network rework. The result was 30% annual broadband traffic growth supported since 2008, alongside reduced annual capex and opex spend.
