A Ericsson Case Study
Telstra, Australia’s leading telecommunications company, needed to keep up with rapid subscriber and data-traffic growth on its Next G™ mobile network while improving capacity, service quality, and cost efficiency. Ericsson partnered with Telstra to support this challenge through mobile core network transformation using its Mobile Softswitch Solution and common-core GSM/WCDMA voice and data pooling technologies.
Ericsson implemented the world’s first common core GSM&WCDMA MSC and SGSN pools, along with the MSC Server Blade Cluster and 3G Direct Tunnel. The new setup increased resilience and capacity, supported up to eight million subscribers in just two cabinets, reduced footprint to as little as 10% of previous servers, and is expected to save Telstra 556 MWh of energy over four years. Ericsson says the transformation also lowered node count, improved performance, and helped Telstra move toward an all-IP network.
