Smile Communications brings an enriched user experience to Nigeria with the launch of West Africa’s first 4G LTE network

Smile Communications, Nigeria, needed to bring world-class mobile broadband to a market where mobile data coverage and speeds had historically been poor. To do that, the operator partnered with Ericsson to leverage its 800 MHz spectrum license and introduce West Africa’s first 4G LTE network, using LTE radio technology, RBS 6000, AIR Antennae, and a complete Evolved Packet Core.

Ericsson designed, installed, implemented, and integrated the network, rolling out more than 1,100 LTE sites across Nigeria and completing the Lagos deployment in just one month. The result was a major improvement in user experience, with faster browsing and downloads, overwhelmingly positive customer feedback, and a rapid increase in users shortly after launch, strengthening Smile Communications’ competitive position.
