Case Study: China Unicom achieves gigabit LTE network capacity with Ericsson

Network capacity planning to increase bandwidth in China

China Unicom, working with Ericsson, needed to expand network capacity for both consumer and industrial users while making better use of its existing 4G/LTE network and preparing for a smooth transition to 5G. To meet growing demand from services like 4K video, VR/AR, and autonomous driving, the company turned to Ericsson’s Radio Dot System and Gigabit LTE technology.

Ericsson implemented a commercial Gigabit LTE network for China Unicom, including LTE broadcast capabilities on the Hainan Island high-speed train and 1Gbps network trials in multiple provinces. The result was a major step toward 5G, with peak speeds of up to 979Mbps, improved bandwidth capacity, better customer experience, and stronger network resource utilization to support future profitability.
