A Ericsson Case Study
Maroc Telecom, Morocco’s incumbent telecom operator, wanted to extend mobile coverage into rural and remote areas while reducing operating costs and supporting subscriber growth. To do this, it partnered with Ericsson and adopted a cost-efficient network expansion approach using a turnkey GSM radio network, MINI-LINK™ equipment, and a solar-powered site solution.
Ericsson implemented self-contained solar sites with RBS, antennas, MINI-LINK™, battery backup, and solar panels, enabling Maroc Telecom to avoid expensive grid power and diesel generators. The result was faster rollout, expanded coverage in previously inaccessible areas, lower energy and OPEX costs, reduced operational risk, and improved environmental performance; customer satisfaction was reported at 100 percent in 2006.
