Case Study: MTN Uganda achieves scalable, secure mobile money growth with Ericsson Wallet Platform

A Ericsson Case Study

Preview of the MTN Group Case Study

Leading communications operator restores confidence in mobile money

MTN Uganda, part of MTN Group, needed to modernize its mobile money platform after the existing wallet system became outdated, causing peak-hour outages and raising concerns about fraud, reliability, and scalability. To restore customer confidence and support its fast-growing mobile financial services, MTN partnered with Ericsson and moved to Ericsson Wallet Platform and Converged Wallet.

Ericsson implemented the new platform with real-time integration to MTN’s charging system, enabling a more secure, stable, and scalable mobile money service. The results included faster rollout of new services, stronger customer confidence, and major growth in usage: active accounts rose from about 3.1 million in September 2014 to 4.7 million by the end of 2015, with around 44 million transactions processed per month.
