Case Study: XL Axiata boosts indoor connectivity at Jakarta Airport with Ericsson Radio Dot System

A Ericsson Case Study

Preview of the XL Axiata Case Study

Ericsson partnered with XL Axiata to improve the user experience by focusing on long-term strategies, rather than just technology or features

XL Axiata, one of Indonesia’s major telecommunications operators, needed to improve indoor mobile experience for its subscribers, especially in high-traffic public venues like Jakarta Airport. With growing data demand, many roaming users, and an existing 2G-based antenna system that performed poorly for 3G and LTE, the operator also faced high antenna rental costs. Ericsson provided the Radio Dot System and Micro Remote Radio Unit as the indoor small cell solution.

Ericsson implemented a fully integrated LTE and 3G/WCDMA indoor small cell deployment at Jakarta Airport, supported by project management, design, implementation, and tuning services. The rollout increased data and voice traffic by up to 300 percent, cut antenna rental costs by 30 percent, and reduced annual opex by 23 percent while lowering total capex by 12 percent. As a result, XL Axiata delivered a better indoor connectivity experience for passengers and travelers.
