Case Study: Star-Cell expands rural mobile coverage with Ericsson's solar and satellite network solution

A Ericsson Case Study

Preview of the Star-Cell Case Study

Ericsson joins Cambodian operator Star-Cell to bring mobile services to remote areas

Star-Cell, a Cambodian GSM mobile operator launched in 2007, wanted to expand beyond major cities into rural areas where most of the population lives, but faced major challenges from limited infrastructure, difficult terrain, and high deployment costs. Ericsson helped Star-Cell address this need with a solution based on the RBS 2111 Main Remote unit, solar power, and satellite backhaul.

Ericsson implemented a GSM network rollout using Ericsson Sun Site and Satellite Cellular Backhaul to extend coverage in remote areas while keeping operations efficient. The result was a viable, lower-cost business model that enabled Star-Cell to bring reliable mobile services to rural communities, expand its reach across Cambodia, and strengthen its reputation as a sustainable, socially responsible operator.
