Digicel launches voice and data services in the remote Amazon region of Suriname

Digicel Suriname, part of Digicel Group, wanted to expand its footprint in South America and improve mobile communications across Suriname, including extremely remote interior areas with limited roads and infrastructure. To meet this challenge, Digicel worked with Ericsson to launch GSM voice and data services using solutions such as RBS 2111, MINI-LINK TN, Marconi LH, and Ericsson’s network deployment and systems integration services.

Ericsson delivered a solar-powered, compact, and cost-efficient remote site solution, along with 100% of the microwave network, enabling coverage deep into the Amazon region. The rollout was completed in just four and a half months, helping Digicel establish reliable voice and data services, reach about 99% of the population, and create a strong platform for future growth in mobile internet and potential 3G services.
