City of Los Angeles and Philips shine a light on 4G LTE app coverage with Ericsson

The City of Los Angeles faced the challenge of expanding public lighting and mobile connectivity in one of the largest urban street networks in the U.S. With growing demand for broadband and IoT-ready infrastructure, Los Angeles needed a way to improve street lighting while also supporting denser 4G LTE coverage. Ericsson, working with Philips, was part of the smart street lighting solution using Philips SmartPole technology with built-in wireless capabilities.

Ericsson helped deploy SmartPoles that house small cell 4G/LTE equipment, turning streetlights into a dual-purpose infrastructure asset for energy-efficient lighting and stronger mobile network performance. The solution improved data capacity and coverage in dense urban areas, reduced signal dropouts, and created a scalable platform for future smart city services. Ericsson’s approach also supported alternative 4G LTE broadband deployment methods and helped position Los Angeles as a model for connected, sustainable cities.
