Case Study: Chunghwa Telecom achieves network transformation and broadband growth with Ericsson optical solutions

A Ericsson Case Study

Preview of the Chunghwa Telecom Case Study

Chunghwa Telecom first in Taiwan to launch multiscreen television service

Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan’s largest telecommunications operator, needed to transform its network to stay ahead in a more competitive market and support new revenue opportunities such as SAN, multimedia, and IPTV. Ericsson was selected after a lengthy evaluation to deliver an end-to-end optical transport infrastructure as part of Chunghwa Telecom’s Optical Era Project, using a Full Service Broadband solution with WDM, ROADM/WSS, and optical management capabilities.

Ericsson implemented a scalable optical network that enabled metro, regional, and long-haul services on a common platform, reducing operational costs and improving speed, performance, and upgrade flexibility. The results were strong: Chunghwa Telecom expanded into new enterprise services, reached 686,000 IPTV subscribers by Q1 2009, and saw a 57.6% year-on-year increase in IPTV customers, while positioning the network for future broadband growth.
