Acea, Italy, a major utility provider, needed to comply with new smart metering legislation while integrating meter data management, controlling operating costs, and securing revenue. Ericsson was selected as its technology and implementation partner for an Advanced Metering Management project supported by Managed Services.
Ericsson implemented a complete smart metering solution including systems integration, a data center, and software operated from its Global Service Delivery Center in Rome. The results included remote meter reading and management, supervision of MV/LV substations, fraud detection, improved billing accuracy, reduced opex, and better customer satisfaction. The rollout reached 1 million installed meters at 2,000 per day, with all 1.6 million planned meters scheduled for completion by Q3 2009.
