Sacramento Regional Transit District Used Connected Buses to Serve Communities During Pandemic

Sacramento Regional Transit (SacRT) faced a COVID-19 challenge: with ridership limited to essential travel, the agency wanted to support communities lacking home Internet access by turning buses into “super hotspots.” To do this, SacRT partnered with Cradlepoint, deploying Cradlepoint IBR1700 Wi‑Fi‑enabled wireless edge routers and the Cradlepoint NetCloud Service for Mobile to provide built‑in Gigabit‑Class LTE and simplified central management.

Cradlepoint donated several IBR1700 routers and SacRT used NetCloud Manager to monitor application usage, track cellular signal strength and quality, adjust configurations, and enforce web filtering. The Cradlepoint solution enabled LTE‑connected buses to provide Wi‑Fi at schools, libraries, parks and neighborhoods—supporting distance learning, job applications, telehealth, and meal deliveries to seniors—while giving SacRT measurable analytics and control to sustain and expand these services.
