A Equinix Case Study
Chi-X Australia launched in October 2011 as the first competitive trading venue for ASX-listed equities, aiming to offer lower costs, new order types and greater flexibility. Entering a deregulating market long dominated by the Australian Securities Exchange, Chi-X faced the challenge of attracting liquidity and major participants quickly without imposing expensive carrier fees or high-friction connectivity that would deter potential partners.
Chi-X solved this by colocating on Platform Equinix, gaining proximity to market data vendors, trading system providers and network operators and enabling simple cross-connects for participants. The partnership delivered a rapid, low-cost rollout—23 participants on day one and 95% of the top trading firms—driving record trading days above A$1 billion and market-share peaks around 17–18%, while providing the low-latency, high-performance infrastructure needed to scale further.
