A EOS Case Study
EOS Data Analytics was approached by Azerbaijan to support its agricultural sector by finding an optimal method for predicting cotton and tobacco yields on a district level. The challenge involved creating accurate forecasts for the 2018 growing season in the Shaki and Sabirabad districts to aid in farm management and strategic planning.
The solution implemented by EOS involved using the WOFOST crop simulation model to analyze a wide range of statistical, meteorological, soil, and phenology data. The EOS team adapted the model parameters for the local conditions, ran simulations to estimate crop biomass, and applied a statistical approach to forecast yields for 2018. The results provided the client with predicted yields for both crops, with validation showing a standard error for tobacco of 0.7 centners per hectare and for cotton between 1.5 to 1.9 centners per hectare.
