Preview of the Rennteam Uni Stuttgart Case Study

Rennteam Uni Stuttgart increases rigidity by 20% and cuts weight 35% with EOS GmbH

The customer, Rennteam Uni Stuttgart, faced the challenge of developing a highly stable yet lightweight steering stub axle for their Formula Student race car, as traditional precision casting limited their design freedom and the part's full potential. They partnered with vendor EOS GmbH and utilized Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) technology to address this.

The solution implemented by EOS allowed the engineers to design and fabricate a part perfectly matched to structural requirements. This resulted in a 35% reduction in weight (660 grams) and a 20% increase in rigidity, which contributed to faster lap times and reduced fuel consumption, helping the team win the Formula Student Germany 2012 title.
