MTU cuts borescope boss production costs by double digits with EOS

The customer, MTU Aero Engines, faced the challenge of optimizing its use of EOS additive manufacturing machines to produce safe and cost-effective components for series production in the demanding aerospace sector. As Germany's leading engine manufacturer, MTU needed to find a strategic application for the technology that balanced innovation with cost and safety pressures.

The solution implemented by EOS was the additive manufacturing of borescope bosses, access points for engine inspection, for the Geared Turbo Fan engine on the Airbus A320neo. Using EOS machines and a nickel-based alloy, MTU achieved series production of up to 2,000 parts annually. The results for EOS's customer included double-digit percentage cost savings compared to conventional methods, significantly reduced development times, and a high level of quality that was certified by aviation authorities.
