Magna cuts cycle time by 17% with EOS GmbH

Innomia, a production optimization company working for its customer Magna, a major automotive supplier, faced a challenge with the inefficient cooling of an injection mold for a car armrest. Irregular heat dissipation was causing part deformations and frequent maintenance. To solve this, they partnered with vendor EOS GmbH and utilized EOS metal 3D printing technology, specifically DMLS, to create a new tool insert.

The solution from EOS involved manufacturing a mold core with integrated conformal cooling channels, which are only possible through additive manufacturing. This led to more uniform heat distribution and dissipation. The results for Magna included a 17% reduction in production cycle time, an extension of maintenance intervals from every two weeks to every five or six weeks, and the complete elimination of condensation and corrosion issues, significantly lowering costs and improving part quality.
