Case Study: Festo achieves lighter, more cost-effective bionic grippers with EOS 3D printing

A EOS GmbH Case Study

Preview of the Festo AG & Co. KG Case Study

Festo AG & Co. KG reduces gripper weight by 80% with EOS GmbH

The customer, Festo AG & Co. KG, required a more economic method for producing its complex, lightweight bionic grippers in small batches. They turned to vendor EOS GmbH and utilized its additive manufacturing technology, including the FORMIGA P 100 system, to address this challenge.

The solution implemented by EOS enabled the tool-less production of grippers with integrated functionality, which drastically reduced both part count and assembly costs. The results were significant: the final 3D-printed gripper was 80% lighter than conventional metal versions, and the process saved 40% in unit costs compared to injection molding. EOS's technology allowed Festo to manufacture a complete Bionic Handling Assistant in just four building sessions.
