Case Study: Deutsche Bahn achieves faster, lower-cost custom train parts with EOS 3D printing

A EOS GmbH Case Study

Preview of the Deutsche Bahn Case Study

Deutsche Bahn cuts train part production time by 75% with EOS

Deutsche Bahn faced the challenge of sourcing small batches of discontinued, thin-walled fluorescent tube fixtures for the information displays inside its ICE trains. Conventional manufacturing methods were uneconomical for such a small series, leading the company to seek an alternative. They partnered with vendor EOS GmbH and its additive manufacturing technology to address this issue.

The solution implemented by EOS GmbH, through a contract manufacturer using a FORMIGA P 110 system and PA 2210 FR material, was to re-engineer and 3D print the parts. This resulted in an 80% reduction in production costs and a 75% reduction in production time compared to injection molding. The parts were delivered within a month, passed all functional and stringent fire safety tests, and allowed Deutsche Bahn to maintain its fleet economically and reliably.
