A EOS GmbH Case Study
The customer, AMCM, is a group within EOS GmbH focused on additive manufacturing customized machines. An employee, Everlee DeWall, faced the challenge of severe hip dysplasia and osteoarthritis. After less effective treatments like physical therapy and injections, he required double hip replacement surgery but was initially told he would not receive the advanced 3D printed implants he was familiar with from his work.
The vendor, EOS GmbH, provided its direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) technology on EOS M 290 systems to manufacture the titanium acetabular cups. The 3D printed implants featured a porous geometry that mimics human bone, encouraging rapid bone growth and fusion. For the patient, this resulted in an extremely fast recovery; he was climbing stairs hours after surgery and walking without a crutch within two days. EOS's technology has helped make such improved outcomes more accessible and has become a standard inventory item at some hospitals.
