Airbus Defence and Space cuts satellite bracket production costs by 20% with EOS GmbH

Airbus Defence and Space faced a challenge in designing retaining brackets for its satellites. The brackets needed to securely link the satellite body to its reflectors while also mitigating extreme temperature fluctuations in space. To address this, the company turned to the additive manufacturing technology for metal parts offered by EOS GmbH.

EOS implemented a solution using titanium and additive manufacturing, which allowed for a redesign of the component. This resulted in an improved temperature resistance capable of withstanding a 330 °C range under force. The solution also provided significant measurable benefits: a production cost reduction of more than 20% and a weight reduction of 300 grams per bracket, saving nearly one kilogram per satellite.
