Aenium Engineering scales 3D-printed nasal swabs to 40,000 units/day with EOS GmbH

The customer, Aenium Engineering, faced the challenge of meeting a critical shortage of certified nasal swabs for COVID-19 testing. They needed to rapidly develop and mass-produce a class IIa medical device with a specific porous surface and high flexibility that could not be manufactured conventionally. They collaborated with vendor EOS GmbH, utilizing EOSINT P systems and EOS PA2200 material.

EOS GmbH provided the industrial 3D printing technology that enabled the mass production of up to 40,000 certified nasal swabs per day. The solution resulted in the first government-certified 3D-printed nasal swab, which successfully passed clinical trials and received certification from Spanish and North American health authorities. This allowed for the decentralized, on-demand production of hundreds of thousands of swabs to fight supply chain shortages.
