Severn Trent Water - Customer Case Study

Severn Trent Water, a UK utility serving more than 8 million customers, needed a more flexible and secure way to enable employees, contractors, and suppliers to access its network remotely. The company was using RSA one-time-passcode hardware tokens, but renewal costs, lost-token replacements, and the inconvenience of carrying physical tokens made the system rigid and costly. Vendor Entrust was brought in to provide a more usable authentication approach, centered on its IdentityGuard software authentication platform.

Entrust implemented an SMS-based OTP “soft token” solution through IdentityGuard, with out-of-the-box integration for migration from RSA, Juniper remote access, and Active Directory. The rollout was seamless, enabling faster provisioning and self-service updates for employee mobile numbers and contractor enrollment. According to Severn Trent Water, the move to Entrust reduced costs by about £100k per year, with savings coming from lower renewal expenses and reduced operational overhead for token management and distribution.
