PLUSCARD authenticates payments with FIDO

PLUSCARD, a leading German card issuer, needed a way to let customers shop and pay online without relying on a mobile app for two-factor authentication. Around 10% to 12% of cardholders were unwilling or unable to use a smartphone for authentication, so PLUSCARD turned to Entersekt and Netcetera to find a PSD2-compliant alternative that would support secure card payments.

Entersekt and Netcetera implemented a hardware token solution based on the open FIDO standard, including a FIDO2 USB Security Key for payment authentication. The result was Europe’s first PSD2-compliant FIDO implementation for payment authentication, giving customers more choice, reducing reliance on SMS OTPs, and creating a future-proof path for additional FIDO-based authentication methods.
