U.S. Defense Agency Finds Benefits to Oracle Migration

A U.S. defense agency that manages large volumes of geospatial and other data was using an Oracle database with the Spatial Option to support a critical application that required complex, fast queries. The Oracle implementation had limits—some functionality couldn’t be implemented, updates relied on a daily bulk-load cycle (no real-time data), the application did much of the processing instead of the database, and it ran on costly hardware.

The agency migrated the application to EDB Postgres Advanced Server/PostgreSQL with the PostGIS extension using EDB’s Oracle compatibility and deployed it on inexpensive virtual machines. By moving processing into the database and using PostGIS data types, performance doubled, updates became near real-time via web interfaces, geospatial query capabilities expanded, portability improved, maintenance costs fell, and end-user satisfaction and usage increased.
