A U.S. defense agency responsible for securing information for national defense was managing large stores of geospatial data on an Oracle database with the Spatial Option. The Oracle-based application handled complex queries but could not deliver required functionality, and the agency sought a more flexible, lower-cost geospatial solution that would reduce hardware costs and application complexity.

The agency migrated the application to EDB Postgres using EDB’s Oracle compatibility and added the PostGIS extension, running the database on inexpensive virtual machines. By moving processing into the database and using PostGIS data types, the system supported near‑real‑time updates, doubled performance, simplified the application layer, improved portability and user satisfaction, and lowered long‑term maintenance and hardware costs.
