London Tunnel Monitoring System Improves Resilience by 92% with PostgreSQL

Costain (formerly Simulation Systems Limited) was engaged by Transport for London to build a new surveillance system for tunnel safety, integrating cameras and many environmental sensors. The primary challenge was resilience: the existing failover from the primary to standby system took two minutes—long enough to risk tunnel closures and major disruption—so Costain needed a faster, reliable transition to maintain continuous monitoring.

Costain deployed EDB Postgres Advanced Server with Backup and Recovery to power two mission-critical systems (surface and tunnel), supporting 400 cameras and 150 operators. The solution cut failover time from two minutes to 10 seconds (a 92% improvement), preserved changes made during secondary operation, and delivered the performance, scalability, support, and cost-effectiveness Costain required.
