European Financial Services Institute Moves to Postgres from Oracle to Support Virtual Environment

A leading Nordic financial services institute with more than 10,000 employees across 20+ countries undertook a major digital transformation to move to a virtualized VMware environment and respond faster to customer needs. Faced with Oracle’s costly and complex licensing for virtual environments and stringent regulatory data-protection requirements, the bank decided to migrate as many systems as possible from Oracle to Postgres—but only with commercial support in place.

The company adopted EDB Postgres for new applications and migrated a growing estate (about 50 Postgres databases, 8–10 in production), supported by EDB tools such as Failover Manager, Enterprise Manager and BART plus enterprise security (GSSAPI/Kerberos, LDAP, SSL). PL/SQL compatibility sped DBA onboarding, the platform delivered high availability and scalable performance (one system handles ~303M trades/year and 1–2 TB of data), lowered virtualisation costs versus Oracle, and set the organization up for a future private DBaaS strategy.
