AEKWL Modernizes Medical Workflow System with PostgreSQL and EDB

ÄKWL (Ärztekammer Westfalen‑Lippe) is the State Chamber of Physicians for Westphalia‑Lippe, representing about 47,000 doctors. The organization faced a critical modernization challenge: an aging Oracle Forms–based internal administrative system that caused “breaks in media” (paper workflows, scanning, reprinting), poor integration with external services, and costly licensing/virtualization constraints. They needed a web‑based, supported solution that could be rolled out while still feeding data back into legacy systems.

AEKWL chose EDB Postgres Advanced Server because it could write back to their Oracle system, offered strong migration experience, responsive support, and flexible licensing across virtualized environments. EDB now provides the primary data store for the new web administrative platform, improving uptime and digital workflows for a 24/7 portal with roughly 40,000 external users, reducing licensing headaches, and enabling plans to decommission Oracle/MySQL, add clustering and BI capabilities, and better ensure business continuity (including through COVID‑19).
