NHS Foundation Trust Increases Energy Performance, Savings and Unlocks IoT Benefits

Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust (WWL), a 5,000‑staff organisation with 750 inpatient beds and around 300,000 outpatients a year, needed to reduce energy use across its sites as part of a Carbon Management Implementation Plan. An audit of the Thomas Linacre Centre (TLC) found 904 ageing fluorescent fixtures consuming a large share of building energy, and the Trust set targets for major lighting energy savings, improved lighting quality and better space utilisation reporting.

WWL ran a pilot then upgraded TLC with Enlighted LED luminaires fitted with smart sensors and Bluetooth beacons to create an IoT lighting network. The retrofit (612 new fixtures) delivered dramatic energy reductions in the pilot (up to 91% locally), is forecast to save about £38,000/year for lighting with a four‑year payback, and met the Trust’s sub‑five‑year ROI goal. Beyond lighting, the system now provides task tuning, occupancy and daylight control, space‑utilisation analytics and real‑time asset‑tracking, enabling better operational planning and a planned wider roll‑out across the Trust.
