California Pizza Kitchen - Customer Case Study

California Pizza Kitchen partnered with ENGIE Insight after the 2008 recession exposed a major operating expense: about $21 million a year in energy costs across more than 250 restaurant locations. As a fast-casual chain hit by declining customer counts, the company needed clearer visibility into where energy was being wasted and how to take control of this high-cost line item.

ENGIE Insight implemented monthly Energy Performance Reports (EPRs) that benchmarked site performance, compared locations against similar restaurants and DOE averages, and highlighted the worst-performing stores. Using these reports, California Pizza Kitchen targeted low- and no-cost fixes such as HVAC tune-ups, CFL bulbs, set-point adjustments, window shades, and water-saving fixtures, resulting in a 4.3% decrease in electricity usage and a 2.82% decrease in natural gas usage by the end of 2009.
