A EnergyCAP Case Study
The University of New Mexico (UNM), a large public research university with more than 12 million square feet across its main and branch campuses, faced persistent energy waste—lights and systems left on in unoccupied buildings—which prompted then‑President David J. Schmidly to task Lobo Energy with changing campus behavior and improving energy management. EnergyCAP Enterprise software was deployed as the central data storage and analysis tool to support measurement & verification (M&V) and reporting across UNM’s meters and vendor bills.
Lobo Energy assigned Energy Conservation Specialists to perform audits, continuous monitoring, occupant engagement and commissioning, while importing interval meter data and utility bills into EnergyCAP (using Bill CAPture to cut bill processing from 3–4 hours to about 30 minutes) and using EnergyCAP’s Cost Avoidance M&V to track results. EnergyCAP-enabled reporting helped drive buy‑in and operational changes that produced documented annual energy use avoidance of 16–26% (22% overall since the program began) and more than $52 million in avoided energy costs.
