Miami-Dade County Discovers the Power of Focused Team Leadership

Miami Dade County faced a fragmented, manual approach to managing $100 million in annual electricity expenses across more than 1,500 facilities and 24 departments, receiving 54,000 electricity bills per year without a standardized process. The County’s legacy in-house system could not handle countywide utility management, mismanaged estimated bills, and required extensive manual data entry and reconciliation—so Miami Dade County engaged EnergyCAP and its energy management software to centralize and modernize utility billing and reporting.

EnergyCAP implemented a countywide solution (fully automated by October 2012) that ingests FPL EDI files, batches and audits bills, provides a configurable Workflow Manager and Issue Tracker, and automatically submits data to ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager. The platform now tracks 4,500 meters and one billion kWh annually, enabled training of 200+ staff across 24 departments, freed labor for other initiatives, helped identify vacated leases and a 226% audit variance leading to a fraud investigation, and delivered an estimated $2 million in annual utility savings (about 2% of electricity expenses). EnergyCAP’s deployment standardized processes, improved accountability, and produced measurable financial and operational impact.
