How a New Zealand university saved 18% on annual energy consumption

Direct Control, a New Zealand building management and system control specialist, needed a cloud‑based energy analytics solution to integrate with its existing LoRaWAN IoT sensor platform (IQnexus) and expand its commercial and industrial energy‑management offering. Direct Control subscribed to EnergyCAP’s white‑labeled energy analytics dashboard and tools and launched a trial at Auckland University of Technology’s WO building with an initial optimization target of 10% annual energy savings.

EnergyCAP integrated with IQnexus via API, provided analytics and an IPMVP M&V tool to pinpoint HVAC and BMS issues (AHUs running on weekends, overworked supply fan, inappropriate cooling), and supported implementation of ECMs including a higher‑efficiency chiller/cooling tower and AHU setpoint resets. Using EnergyCAP’s M&V workflows to verify results, the project achieved an 18% reduction in energy use, NZ$32,725 annual savings and a 7.85‑year payback, surpassing the original 10% target and leading AUT to commission work on more campus buildings.
