Carnegie Mellon University - Customer Case Study

Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) needed a better way to manage complex utility data across a large campus. The university struggled with limited visibility into utility usage, difficulty aligning costs to the actual period of use, and a manual, siloed process that only a small IT team could access. CMU used EnergyCAP Utility Management, along with EnergyCAP Bill CAPture and chargeback services, to improve financial operations and make energy and cost data more accessible across departments.

With EnergyCAP, CMU created a documented monthly chargeback process tied to real billing periods and building-level usage, using data from 700+ monthly vendor bills and 120+ internal utility meters. EnergyCAP also automated bill auditing, flagging anomalies such as duplicate bills, overlapping statement dates, and unexpected usage changes, while simplifying ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager reporting. The result was greater billing accuracy, faster reporting, reduced manual work, and improved access to audited energy and cost information for campus teams.
