Evonik Autonomous inspection in chemical facilities

The specialty chemicals company Evonik partnered with Energy Robotics to implement an autonomous inspection solution for its chemical facilities. The challenge was to perform consistent and reliable inspections, including reading difficult-to-access gauges and monitoring for anomalies, while maintaining the industry's high safety standards and keeping personnel out of hazardous environments.

Energy Robotics equipped a Boston Dynamics Spot robot with its control and autonomy software, an intuitive user interface, and sensors including infrared and optical cameras. The solution enabled the robot to autonomously complete inspection routes, read analog devices, and collect data to detect issues like leaks or temperature deviations. Energy Robotics' technology allowed Evonik to increase inspection quality and frequency, and the successful test is leading to plans for expanding the robot's capabilities and use in actual production facilities.
