Autonomous Inspection of remote Substations at E.DIS

The customer, E.DIS, a large German energy network operator, sought to modernize the inspection of its remote electrical substations. The challenge involved automating repetitive and potentially hazardous tasks like reading analog gauges and checking security features. To address this, E.DIS partnered with vendor Energy Robotics to pilot their autonomous robot solution and AI-driven software platform.

Energy Robotics implemented a pilot program using autonomous mobile robots equipped with sensitive measuring systems and cameras. These robots were adapted to reliably automate inspection data collection and operate via LTE and 5G networks. The successful test provided E.DIS with crucial insights, demonstrating the potential to significantly shorten inspection cycles and greatly increase worker safety by removing personnel from hazardous environments. The pilot paved the way for a full-scale deployment across multiple substations.
