360° automated inspection from the ground and the air at Shell Rheinland

Shell Energy faced the challenge of automating inspection processes at its largest site in Germany, the Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Rheinland. The company sought to modernize its operations, improve safety standards, and gain high-quality data through digitalization. To address this, Shell partnered with vendor Energy Robotics to implement its software platform for managing autonomous robots and drones.

The solution implemented by Energy Robotics consisted of its hardware-agnostic software platform, which managed a mixed fleet of two robots and a drone. This enabled 360° monitoring, using AI and computer vision to autonomously read gauges, check valves, detect thermal anomalies, and identify gas leaks. Energy Robotics provided a unified interface for remote mission planning and data analysis, leading to improved safety, a better working environment, and a wealth of consistent, high-quality inspection data for Shell.
