Nonprofit Builds Employee Engagement to Enhance Recruiting and Satisfaction

Seneca Family of Agencies, a nonprofit providing community-based and family-focused services for children and families, needed a better way to capture employee feedback as it grew beyond 1,000 employees. Existing feedback through staff meetings had become unwieldy, and leadership wanted a more effective, normed benchmark to improve recruitment, satisfaction, and continuous quality improvement. They turned to Energage and its employee engagement survey and Top Workplaces program to understand how they compared with other organizations and uncover issues at both the agency and team level.

Energage provided a confidential, dynamic survey plus deeper data analysis, helping Seneca identify differences across programs, locations, and supervisors, and then act on company-wide issues such as compensation, communication, diversity, and inclusion. Seneca used those insights to launch a two-tiered engagement strategy focused on organizational improvements and targeted manager support. As a result, overall employee engagement rose 5% in 13 months, leadership confidence increased 12% and reached 14% above the nonprofit human and social services benchmark, and Seneca earned a Bay Area Top Workplaces ranking of 9th among large companies.
