World’s Largest Cold Storage Network Cools Down Rising Energy Costs with Enel X Demand Response

VersaCold, a world leader in temperature-sensitive food handling with 120 cold storage warehouses and distribution centers across Canada and the U.S., was looking for ways to reduce energy consumption and operating costs while creating a new revenue stream. The company evaluated demand response providers and chose Enel X for its ability to help cold storage facilities participate effectively without disrupting operations.

Enel X implemented a demand response program that allowed VersaCold to make minor temporary adjustments to refrigeration, compressors, and battery chargers during dispatches while keeping full control of its equipment. The result was energy reductions of more than 3.2 megawatts, about 2-4 dispatches per year, and estimated annual payments of $160,000 from Enel X, along with lower energy use and a reduced carbon footprint.
